1.15.17: Do More Today
Every Sunday, Project 1461 shares other actions we've collected from our partner sites around the web. Today we're featuring, in its entirety, the most recent edition of one of our favorite weekly newsletters, Michael Skolnik's Movement to Resist Trump.
THE MOVEMENT TO OPPOSE TRUMP
The great challenge for any opposition movement is focus and discipline. At times it will seem like we are losing, at times it will seem as if we have a strong defense, and at times we will take the offensive. There will be ups and downs. We will lose more than we will win. But, no matter what, remember the American people are on our side. They believe in what we believe in, by an overwhelming majority. Knowing that, believing that, gives us hope that in a matter of short time we will reclaim the journey of our nation, but it will take extraordinary focus and discipline. And it will take great numbers of people. This email will be sent 15,023 people this week. If you think someone needs to join the opposition, forward them this email and tell them to sign up!
It's time to get to work.
Please feel free to forward this message to your friends and encourage them to join: here is the subscription link!
#SaveACA + Join A Healthcare Rally This Sunday: The Republicans are attempting to repeal the Affordable Care Act without any replacement, and they are already taking votes - The Senate voted at 1AM on Thursday morning to put the wheels in motion and the House will take up a vote on Friday. We need your help now! Tell your story to your member of Congress by using the hashtag #SaveACA on social media and call your reps at 202-224-3121 today.
On Sunday, January 15, join Democratic members of Congress, trade unions, senior groups, health care activists and all those who believe in economic and social justice to tell Republicans loudly and clearly: we won't let you throw nearly 30 million people off of health insurance, make massive cuts to Medicaid and defund Planned Parenthood. Click here to find a rally near you.
Watch Cory Booker's Testimony Against Jeff Sessions: In an unprecedented moment in Senate history, New Jersey Senator Cory Booker testified against a fellow sitting Senator during a cabinet confirmation hearing, for the first time. Jeff Sessions is President-Elect's choice for Attorney General, and today Cory gave an impassioned speech against his Senate colleague. Watch his speech here.
There is still is chance that the Senate can vote against Sessions, but it will need a lot of public pressure. If you a constituent of one of the following three Senators, or know people who are, call them to let them know you oppose the nomination:
- Senator Jeff Flake (R — AZ): (202) 224–4521
- Senator Lindsey Graham (R — SC): (202) 224–5972
- Senator Michael S. Lee (R — UT): (202) 224–5444
Call Marco Rubio: In a blistering take-down of Rex Tillerson during his Senate confirmation hearing for Secretary of State, Marco Rubio expressed great hesitation with putting the CEO of Exxon as our chief diplomat. It appears that there is a chance that Mr. Tillerson may not survive a vote out of the Foreign Relations Committee, which would end the possibility of him ever leading our state department. Call Senator Rubio at202-224-3041 and tell him that you do not support Rex Tillerson for Secretary of State.
Here is a sample script: “Hello, my name is [your name]. I’m calling today to ask the Senator to prevent Rex Tillerson from becoming the next Secretary of State. We can’t afford to have a friend of Vladimir Putin representing our country abroad, nor can we afford to have someone who put his own financial interests above those of the American people. Please, on behalf of our nation, do not allow Rex Tillerson to become Secretary of State.”
Attend + Donate To The Women's March: Over 183,000 people have already committed to joining this historic march on January 21st in Washington, DC. This is an INCLUSIVE march, is FREE to join and EVERYONE who supports women's rights are welcome. Sign up! If you cannot attend, please consider making a donation.
Sign Up For Signal Boost: One of the highlights of the Hillary Clinton campaign was receiving an email from two of their staffers, Zerlina Maxwell and Jess McIntosh. It was full of progressive ideas, actionable items and funny tidbits. They just launched a new weekly email called Signal Boost, which I highly recommend. Sign up here.
Join Solidarity Sundays: A nationwide network of Feminist activist groups, Solidarity Sundays, focuses on taking action to resist Trump. On the 2nd Sunday of each month, they gather in homes across the country to engage with elected officials (via letters, emails, phone calls, social media, and in-person meetings), amplify the action items of existing progressive organizations and build communities of empowered, educated, active feminists who will the Trump agenda and work for peace, justice and equity. Sign up here.
Catch Obama's Farewell Address On Repeat: I had the great pleasure of joining 14,000 people in Chicago to witness President Obama's farewell address live. While it was incredible to be in the room where it happened, I immediately went back to my hotel room to watch it again, so I could see all of the cut-aways to Michelle and Joe and Sasha. Here it is, in case you missed it.
Sign Up For Flippable: Their mission is to turn America blue by building a movement to flip seats. To build this movement, they need to radically simplify political action. They focus on state legislature elections—races that play a huge role in national elections but are often overlooked. Information about these races is hard to find, and busy people don’t have the time to sift through it. That’s where Flippable comes in. They’ll tell you which races are more important, who’s running, and how you can support them. Sign up now!
Join the Love-A-Thon: This Inauguration Day, the Love-A-Thon is raising $500,000 to defend civil liberties. Join us for a three hour Facebook Live broadcast with music, entertainment and stories about causes that matter. The ACLU, Earthjustice and Planned Parenthood need you to tune in. Artists, musicians, and actors including Judd Apatow, Jane Fonda, Jamie Lee Curtis, Patricia Arquette, Christopher Guest, Tim Robbins and Jeff Tweedy of Wilco are coming together live on Inauguration Day to bring you a broadcast packed with music, comedy and surprises you don't want to miss.
