1.31.17: Make the Democrats in Congress fight back
Time to call in your employees at the Capitol for their performance reviews
The Democrats in Congress have to face it: they aren't the leaders of this resistance, we are. And it's time they start listening to us about the right direction for our country instead of giving Trump and the Republicans chance after chance to do the right thing. With Trump's Supreme Court nominee announcement coming today and rumors of an executive order to roll back protections for LGBTQ people, there's no time to waste. Today's call to action: tell Congressional Democrats to grow a backbone, or they're fired.
- Check to see if your Democratic reps have made statements against the Muslim ban. If they haven't, it's time for a sharply-worded phone call asking when they'll have a public statement opposing it.
- Call your Democratic Senators and tell them to delay any additional cabinet nominees' votes until Trump lifts the Muslim ban, and to support Chuck Schumer's bill to repeal the ban. Want to hone in on one nominee? Start with Jeff Sessions, who was one of the engineers of the ban. Here's a script you can use:
My name is [your name], and I'm a constituent of [Senator]. I'm calling to ask the Senator to support Charles Schumer's call to block all remaining cabinet votes until Donald Trump lifts the travel ban on Muslim immigrants and refugees, and to support any repeal of the ban that Democrats introduce in Congress. What is [Senator]'s position on this issue?
- Here are some fun ones: Kirsten Gillibrand of NY is the only (yes, ONLY) Democrat in the Senate who has so far voted against all of Trump's cabinet nominees. Tweet at her and say thanks, or if you're feeling really ambitious, send some flowers to her office! On the other hand, Chuck Schumer, self-proclaimed leader of the resistance to Trump, has voted for -- yep, you guessed it -- all three. Fortunately, there's a registry where you can buy gifts for Schumer to remind him what courage looks like.
- If you're sick and tired of Democrats who aren't working for you and progressive principles, there is hope: Brand New Congress is recruiting 400 new progressive candidates to run for Congress in 2018. Nominate someone, make a donation to support their work, organize locally to recruit, or share the story of their first official candidate, Chardo RIchardson.
