1.16.17: Stand up for public education

Oppose billionaire lobbyist Betsy DeVos, Trump's pick for Secretary of Education.

Secretary of Education nominee, lobbyist, and Republican megadonor Betsy DeVos, who begins Senate confirmation hearings tomorrow, is a dangerously unqualified pick for a position that will affect every school-age child in the country, their families, and every American taxpayer. As her lobbying record in Michigan demonstrates, DeVos—who holds no relevant education experience or credential—is no champion of public schools, instead using her financial contributions and lobbying efforts to back an unregulated, free-market based, "school-choice" ideology which has resulted in a disastrously dysfunctional school system. Today's call to action: make a stand for public education by opposing the nomination of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education.

Act: tell the Senate to reject Betsy DeVos's nomination

Call your senators today to tell them to reject DeVos as Secretary of Education. The Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pension is the first body to vote (see members listed below the sample script); if they approve DeVos, then the nomination will be put before the entire Senate.

Below is a sample script you can use when you contact your Senator. There are many reasons to oppose the DeVos nomination, so feel free to adjust this script depending on your personal priorities and concerns. You can also use this fact sheet to push Senators on the HELP Committee to ask specific questions during DeVos's hearings.

“Hello, my name is [your name] and I am one of [Senator's] constituents. I’m calling today to ask the Senator to reject the nomination of Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education. DeVos is hostile to public education; she holds no relevant experience for this critical position; and her efforts in Michigan have resulted in decimated public schools. DeVos has no business making crucial decisions about the education of American schoolchildren. Please tell the Senator that confirming DeVos will be disastrous for American students and their families.
